El origen de ésta Hacienda se remonta al Siglo XVI, apenas transcurridos 46 años de la caída de la Gran Tenochtitlan bajo el yugo Español, en 1567 el Cabildo de la Villa de San Felipe concede a Don Diego Martín un sitio de ganado menor (1) y dos caballerías (2). En 1572 le da a el bachiller Don Juan Alonso un sitio de ganado menor y dos caballerías. En 1618 el mismo cabildo le otorga a Don Pablo Mares de un sitio de ganado menor y dos caballerías y en 1621 dio a Don Francisco Rodríguez un sitio de ganado mayor y dos caballerías.
Las propiedades antedichas ya para 1631, estaban en posesión de Don Cristóbal de Bocanegra como único dueño con el nombre de Labor de las Trancas, que las dedicó a la cría de ganado y al cultivo de trigo en ese tiempo contaba con 200 reses y 800 ovejas.
Después de pasar por varios dueños en 1696 era propiedad del Capitán Don Andrés de Palencia, provincial de la Santa Hermandad (3) de las Villas de San Miguel y San Felipe y ya llevaba el nombre de San Joaquín de las Trancas.
Para 1709 ya se le denominaba como Hacienda y seguía siendo del capitán Palencia, para luego pasar a manos de el Capitán Don Juan Echeverría Valera, Caballero de la Orden de Santiago (4), de quien pasó a sus descendientes, siendo uno de ellos el bachiller Don Nicolás de Castañeda, quien la vendió en $30,000.00 a Don Manuel Francisco Tomás de la Canal y Bueno de Baeza, éste fue hijo mayor de Don Domingo Gómez de la Canal y Vélez de las Cuevas, cántabro de las montañas de burgos, que arribó a la entonces Nueva España aproximadamente en 1679, donde se convirtió en un próspero comerciante dedicado a transacciones de importación y exportación de productos agrícolas y textiles. Estos negocios le permitieron acceder a la diputación del Consulado de comerciantes de la Ciudad de México y desempeñar un papel destacado en las ferias comerciales de Jalapa, así mismo fue Capitán de infantería y Caballero de la Orden de Calatrava (5), muriendo en la Ciudad de México el 21 de diciembre de 1724.
Don Manuel Francisco Tomás heredó la empresa comercial y el enorme caudal de su padre. En 1731 se trasladó a la Villa de San Miguel el Grande, lugar desde el que mantuvo relaciones económicas con miembros de la elite del Real de Minas de Santa Fe de Guanajuato, en donde se casó con doña María Josefa Gabriela de Hervás y Flores, hija única del rico minero don Juan de Hervás, propietario de varias Haciendas de beneficio, espacios comerciales y casas habitación que a su muerte heredaron su hija, su yerno y sus nietos.
Unidos estas dos prominentes fortunas, Don Manuel Tomás, gracias a su trabajo y visión para los negocios se hizo muy rico, teniendo a más los cargos de regidor perpetuo de la Ciudad de México y de la Villa de San Miguel el Grande y ostentando el nombramiento de Caballero de Calatrava. Su fortuna llegó a ascender a más de medio millón de pesos, teniendo negocios y propiedades en San Miguel el Grande, Guanajuato, León y Querétaro.
Así mismo destacó por sus numerosas obras benéficas en favor de la Iglesia. Al mecenazgo de Manuel de la Canal se debió la construcción de la Santa Casa de Loreto en la Colegiata de San Gregorio de la Compañía de Jesús de México, la Capilla de igual nombre del monasterio de Tepotzotlán, un retablo de la catedral de México y algunas obras en el Santuario de Guadalupe en la Ciudad de México y en la Santa Casa de Loreto en Roma. En San Miguel el Grande, Manuel de la Canal difundió entre sus amigos y la población en general la devoción a la Virgen de Loreto y financió la construcción en 1734 de una Santa Casa dedicada a ella anexa al oratorio de San Felipe Neri, obra en la que invirtió más de 100.000 pesos de su caudal. Su hija, María Josefa Lina de la Canal, heredó esta fuerte devoción y, gracias a la herencia paterna y a la licencia obtenida de Fernando VI, pudo llevar a cabo uno de los proyectos inconclusos de su padre: la construcción del Templo y Real Convento de la Purísima Concepción ahora Centro Cultural Ignacio Ramírez “El Nigromante”.
El 18 de marzo de 1743 creó un mayorazgo con sus bienes dentro de los cuales se incluía la Hacienda de Trancas, murió 6 años después, dejando al frente de sus bienes a su hijo Don José Mariano Loreto de la Canal y Hervás, regidor perpetuo y alférez de la villa de San Miguel, todavía para 1792 la Hacienda de Trancas, y después a su muerte pasó a la de Don Narciso María Loreto de la Canal de Hervás y de Primo, Coronel del heroico Regimiento de Dragones de la Reina, que fuera uno de los núcleos iniciales del movimiento de Independencia. El Rey poco antes agració al Mayorazgo con un Título Nobiliario, que no pudo ser usado, dado que estalló el movimiento independentista antes de haberse materializado en Nueva España su autorización, a más de que su conducta durante los primeros días de la guerra, se les hizo sospechosa a los realistas, por lo que se le formó juicio y sus bienes entre ellos Trancas, fueron incautados y con el tiempo devueltos a sus descendientes, el murió en 1813. Siendo su sucesor en el mayorazgo don Lorenzo María de la Canal y de Landeta, que falleció el 23 de octubre de 1847, quedando como su heredero Don Ramón María de la Canal y Samaniego. El mayorazgo se empezó a desmembrar en 1850, y Trancas pasó a ser propiedad de este último.
En 1855, en una de las recurrentes faltas de agua de la Ciudad de Guanajuato, se proyectó llevar ese vital líquido por la sierra hasta ella, motivo por el cual el 4 de agosto del dicho año fue visitada la Hacienda y sus fuentes por el Gobernador del Estado, General Don Pablo Rocha y Portu; pero el plan nunca se llevó a cabo.
A la muerte de Don Ramón María, heredaron la Hacienda de Trancas, Uriel de Samaniego y su hermana Loreto, ambos celebraron el 5 de junio de 1891 un contrato con Don Ignacio Azanza López de Garayo, Vasco, propietario de la Hacienda de la Sauceda de los Mulatos en el vecino Municipio de San Diego de la Unión, donde había iniciado la cuenca chilera de aquel lugar, en ese contrato él les prestó $50,000.00 pesos con réditos, garantizando los Samaniego el préstamo con la Hacienda de Trancas mediante hipoteca. En el mismo contrato se especificaba la formación de una sociedad integrada por los tres, que tendría como fin el lotificar dicha Hacienda, quedando mientras tanto la administración de la Hacienda y sociedad a cargo de Don Ignacio Azanza. Esta sociedad y sus fines no prosperaron pues él murió al poco tiempo.
Su Viuda Doña María Salgado Chavira, y sus hijos con Don Manuel Azanza Salgado a la cabeza, compraron la Hacienda a los Samaniego, dando una cantidad muy cercana a la primera, quedando como propietario Don Manuel Azanza Salgado que continuo en ella la labor agrícola de su padre, convirtiendo en zona chilera al Municipio de Dolores Hidalgo, Gto.
Además, como él estudio en los Estados Unidos, siempre tuvo un gran interés por lo relacionado a la tecnología, por lo que implantó en la casa grande un laboratorio de fotografía, baño turco, taller mecánico, línea telefónica e hizo uso de la maquinaria agrícola.
Durante la Revolución armada de 1910, alternaba su estancia entre sus Haciendas (San Joaquín de las Trancas, Guadalupe de Támbula en San Miguel de Allende y San Blas de Pabellón en Aguascalientes) y su residencia en las calles de Hamburgo en la Ciudad de México, en ésta etapa histórica se hizo junto con su hermano Don Ildefonso Azanza Salgado, muy amigo del General. Francisco Villa, a quien regalaron el famoso caballo Prieto Azabache a más de prestarle él en lo personal fuertes sumas para su causa.
De acendrada formación católica fue un activo participante en la guerra cristera, junto con toda su familia, motivo por el cual tuvo serias desavenencias y enfrentamientos con el Gobierno Federal, es casi al fin de esta contienda cuando el muere, heredando la Hacienda de Trancas a sus hijos, tocando la casa grande, el actual Hotel a Doña Guadalupe Azanza García y sus hermanos Don Manuel y Salvador Azanza García, quedando al paso de los años como dueño de ella éste último.
En las lomas cercanas a la casa grande, cruzando el río, plantaron un viñedo, comercializando la uva, siendo uno de los antecedentes de la pujante industria vitivinícola, que distingue al Dolores actual.
(1). – Un sitio de Ganado menor, equivale a: 526.683 hectáreas.
(2). – Una caballería, equivale a: 427 956,75 m².
(3). – La Santa Hermandad fue una corporación compuesta por grupos de gente armada, pagados por los concejos municipales, para perseguir a los criminales. Fue instituida por Isabel la Católica en las Cortes de Madrigal de 1476 (siglo XV), unificando las distintas Hermandades que habían existido desde el siglo XI en los reinos cristianos. Algunos estudios lo consideran el primer cuerpo policial de Europa sometido a cierta organización y administración gubernamental.
En nuestro país la fundó en la segunda mitad del siglo 16, el Virrey don Luis de Velasco, Padre, segundo Virrey de la Nueva España, fue sustituida por El Tribunal de La Acordada que fue un tribunal judicial de naturaleza sumaria creado en 1719 en Nueva España para compensar las falencias del sistema judicial ordinario. La estructura legal y social en el virreinato era muy compleja y enrevesada, todo lo cual dificultaba y entorpecía el mantenimiento del orden y el impartir justicia.
Si bien la Sala del Crimen, que dependía de la Real Audiencia, era en principio la encargada de enjuiciar a los delincuentes, el volumen del trabajo pendiente iba en aumento y superaba con creces su capacidad de resolución de casos. La Sala del Crimen estaba conformada por alcaldes y un fiscal, por lo general ancianos, por lo que les era difícil movilizarse a diversos sitios tras los ladrones, bandidos, bandoleros y salteadores de caminos que asolaban a la región.
En diciembre de 1715 el rey Felipe V despachó al marqués de Valero hacia América encomendándole tomar las acciones que fueran necesarias para dar solución a la situación de inseguridad que vivía Nueva España. Sobre la base del mandato otorgado por el rey, el virrey con una junta consultiva decidió:
autorizar el uso de penas corporales nuevamente sin que se tuviera que consultar a la Sala del Crimen; el virrey nombraría a una persona para actuar como juez, asesorado por abogados y aprender y proceder contra todo delincuente en despoblado o poblado, y observar que se ejecutara sentencia a la mayor brevedad posible, sin necesidad de consultar previamente a la Sala del Crimen.
(4). – Orden de SANTIAGO
La Orden de Santiago es una orden religiosa y militar surgida en el siglo XII en el reino de León. Debe su nombre al patrón de España, Santiago el Mayor. Su objetivo inicial era proteger a los peregrinos del Camino de Santiago y expulsar a los musulmanes de la península ibérica.
La orden tuvo su origen en la ciudad de Cáceres a partir de la anterior orden de los Fratres de Cáceres. El obispo de Santiago de Compostela fomentó esta conversión a cambio de que la dicha orden, en su avance reconquistador hacia el sur, no reclamase la devolución del arzobispado a Mérida, donde había estado hasta que la invasión de los musulmanes recomendó su traslado al norte, a Santiago de Compostela.1 Tras la muerte del gran maestre Alonso de Cárdenas en 1493, los Reyes Católicos incorporaron la Orden a la Corona de España y el papa Adriano VI unió para siempre el maestrazgo de Santiago a la corona en 1523.
La primera República suprimió la Orden en 1873 y, aunque en la Restauración fue restablecida, quedó reducida a un instituto nobiliario de carácter honorífico regido por un Consejo Superior dependiente del Ministerio de la Guerra, que quedó a su vez extinguido tras la proclamación de la segunda República en 1931.
La Orden de Santiago, junto con las de Calatrava, Alcántara y Montesa, fue reinstaurada como una asociación civil en el reinado de Juan Carlos I con el carácter de organización nobiliaria honorífica y religiosa, y como tal permanece desde finales del siglo XX.
(5). – ORDEN DE CALATRAVA
Su origen se debe a un gesto heroico. La ciudad de Calatrava, junto al río Guadiana, había sido arrebatada a los árabes por Alfonso VII en 1147. Dada la importancia estratégica del lugar como baluarte avanzado de Toledo ante los moros, tras la corta posesión por parte de ciertos magnates, el rey quiso asegurar su defensa entregándola en 1150 a la Orden del Temple, ya que por aquellas fechas no existían los ejércitos regulares, ni era fácil poblar las zonas de frontera. Unos años más tarde, ante el empuje islámico, el Temple dio la empresa por perdida, y devolvió la fortaleza al sucesor de Alfonso, el rey Sancho III.
Ante la situación creada y el inminente peligro, este reunió a sus notables y ofreció Calatrava a quien se hiciera cargo de su defensa. Entre la sorpresa y las bromas de los nobles, Raimundo, abad del monasterio cisterciense de Fitero, alentado por el monje de su monasterio Diego Velázquez, que había sido anteriormente guerrero, aceptó el reto. Al no haber alternativa, el rey cumplió su palabra, entregando Calatrava a los monjes de Fitero mediante donación realizada el 1 de enero de 1158 en Almazán. Ellos, por su parte, formaron en poco tiempo un ejército de más de 20.000 monjes y soldados, uniendo, a los que había conseguido organizar fray Diego Velázquez en las cercanías de Calatrava, los que había reclutado Don Raimundo en el Reino de Aragón. Ante tal multitud, los árabes rehusaron entrar en batalla, retirándose hacia el sur.
Como el compromiso de defender Calatrava se mantenía y resistiéndose con el tiempo los caballeros a tener por superior a un Abad del Císter y vivir entre los monjes, decidieron elegir un Maestre de la Orden. Los monjes se retiraron a Ciruelos y los caballeros a Ocaña, donde se convirtieron en una Orden militar, la primera hispana, que adoptó el nombre propio del lugar.
El primer Maestre de la Orden fue Don García, que obtuvo del Císter y del Pontificado la primera regla.
Esta regla, modelada sobre las costumbres cistercienses para hermanos laicos, impuso a los caballeros, además de las obligaciones de los tres votos religiosos (obediencia, castidad y pobreza), las de guardar silencio en el dormitorio, refectorio (comedor) y oratorio; ayunar cuatro días a la semana, dormir con su armadura, y llevar, como única vestimenta, el hábito blanco cisterciense con una sencilla cruz negra (luego roja, a partir del siglo xiv) «flordelisada»: una cruz griega con flores de lis en las puntas, que en el siglo xvi se configuró definitivamente como hoy se conoce.
La Orden alcanzó su afianzamiento definitivo tras la Batalla de las Navas de Tolosa (1212), cuando fijó su sede en la nueva y más segura fortaleza de Calatrava la Nueva (1218) (en el antiguo castillo de Dueñas, por frente del castillo de Salvatierra), que fue construida por prisioneros musulmanes en su mayor parte, y que ya nunca abandonaría.
La antigua sede de Calatrava, origen de la Orden, junto al río Guadiana, pasó a convertirse en la sede de una Encomienda, y desde ese momento pasó a ser conocida como Calatrava la Vieja.
En poco tiempo, sus grandes recursos humanos y económicos dieron a la Orden un enorme poder político y militar, que duró hasta el final de la Reconquista. Disponía de tierras y castillos a lo largo de toda la frontera de Castilla y Aragón, ejercitando un señorío feudal sobre miles de vasallos. Era capaz de aportar, a título individual, hasta 2000 caballeros al campo de batalla, una fuerza considerable en la Edad Media. Además, disfrutaba de autonomía, lo cual trajo consigo diversos enfrentamientos con los reyes, dado que la Orden no les obedecía a ellos, sino al Maestre. Sólo se reconocían superiores espirituales: el abad de Morimond (Francia) y, en último término, el Papa.
Fernando el Católico logró ser elegido Maestre de la Orden en 1487 por una bula papal, y a partir de él todos los reyes de España revalidaron el título.
Bajo el mando de los sucesivos monarcas, y con la reconquista de la península finalizada, gradualmente fueron desapareciendo tanto el espíritu militar como el religioso. Con el tiempo, su única razón de existir era la generación de ingresos, procedentes de sus grandes dominios, y la conservación de sus reliquias.
Se restableció en 1875 con el papado como encargado de regular su disciplina interna. En la actualidad, la orden es una institución honorífica.

First this is the most accurately done model of this engine in any scale. This is my perspective, but I think I’m right. Its way better than Trumpeters 1/32 Hellcat engines even better than Tamiyas Corsair P&W R-2800 (Corsairs did have a different variant of this engine) and better then the 1/32 versions done in resins.
Ok let’s get started. First parts # J3 & J4 with J5 are WAY TO BIG!!!, that is the diameter of the area that the remaining engine parts go over is to TO LARGE. You will need to sand approximately 1/2mm to 3/4mm off of the area were the parts J8,J9,J12,J10,J11 and J20 fit you also need to remove material from inside the inner diameters of those parts in order to get them to fit. Sand carefully and test fit often. It’s a lot of work but it will make up into a fantastic model. Rember you also need to do all the clean up to all of these parts that you would normally have to do.
If you will notice on part J11 there are 4 tubes that are molded onto this part that go from one cylinder head to the next. Airfix represented these as a basic tube, when in actuality they have a rubber sleeve in the middle of each one and hose clamps on each end of the rubber tube. You can represent these with some Tamiya tape cut to 3 1/2 mm or 1/8″ (0.125″) and then wrap them around the tube 3 times. Then on the ends of the rubber tube just in form the end wrap some 1/64″ pinstripe tape to represent the hose clamps. The rubber tube should be painted matte black and the clamps should be painted silver. If you don’t want to go this far you can just paint a 1/8″ stripe matte black around the existing tubes on part J11. This is how I’m doing mine.

As the General said on the Blue Max movie…… » Interesting exploit»………….. this is really interesting, as it is not something I’ve seen or going to see in such magnificent detail….. oh yeah, guys detail the engines etc, but this is one I’d like to follow and will most definitely learn something along the way….. at the beginning, you mention that this engine is the most accurate one modeled so far….. better than the Tammy on and resin ones etc….. would you think that maybe just because it is bigger? Would that maybe the reason, I kind of went there, but then on the other hand , the old school Airfix Merlin’s were not real great shakes…. this is going to be one for me to watch, Hope it’s ok to tag along ……
By all means tag along. When I say it is the most accurate I mean it has almost everything included on the kit engine. There are a few things missing, but thats what modeling is all about. The molding to me seems pretty crisp, you need to be careful removing parts from the sprues so you don’t cut of something that is supposed to be there. There are linkages missing but those are almost impossible to create by molded plastic.
Oh, for sure, Ron, I didn’t mean to say that the others were crappy or your explanation was misleading, I totally get where you are coming from, it is the ‘finer’ details that you are doing that will make this already good engine ‘better’, which in turn will make it much more ‘accurate’ in the model world…. almost like a kit in itself? Now there is an idea….. one in the bird worn out and all grubby, and a brand new one ready to install on a stand??? hhhmmmmmm there’s an idea eh? ( Like you don’t have enough on your plate )
Here is a bit more on the engine. The build sequence that Airfix has used is not 100% the right way to do it. If you go through the instructions you will see parts K13 &K14 these are part of the supercharger housing and need to be put on in on page 39. The reason for this is there are some good size gaps on them and they need to be filled and sanded.
as you can see this is the second application of Perfect Plastic Putty it my even need a third. The area that is visible in this photo needs to be painted Grumman gray. Look below for a spray out I did of my custom mixed Vallejo Grumman gray. I think I need to make it a little more blue.
This photo shows part J20 from page 40 and J13 from page 42 joined together. You need to do this before you glue it to the crankcase parts J3 and J4 from page 39. This has to be done because you have to fill and sand the joints between them before you mount them and paint them.
You can see a white part glued to part J20 just behind J13 and to the side. This is a cast in port for an oil pipe that you can see in the previous P&W R-2800 photo. It is made from plastic card stock. And on each end there is a piece of 0.025″ (0.64mm) plastic rod to simulate bolt heads. I need to add a piece of 0.06″ (1.5mm) long plastic tube to it to simulate a fitting for the oil line that goes from it down and back through the cylinders. It’s the larger silver tube from the same previous photo.
This photo shows the joint between parts J13 and J20 that needs to be filled and sanded all the way around. The small cast in circle on part J13 is for the P&W emblem. I will be back with more as soon as I recharge this old battery…lol
All I can say is that I have a special relationship with the big Pratt. I worked between a pair of them for a few years, and other than a mag or two, never gave me any concern. Now, those Godforsaken electric props are another story.
This photo of the front of the engine showing some of the parts temporarily assembled. In the Squadron Walk Around F6F Hellcat on page 45 lower right corner, they state there are two magnetos and the propeller governor mounted on the front gear case. THIS IS WRONG!!! In the above photo you can see two unpainted grey parts the rear one, part J27 is the Bendix-Scintilla DF18LN or DF18RN magneto. The front one, part J24 & J23 is the Hamilton propeller governor. On either side of the magneto are the Scintilla distributors parts J29 & J31 make up the starboard distributor and parts J28 & J32 make up the port distributor. You can also see the baffles with the lower oil collection tank just out of the picture. Parts J27 and J24 get painted semi-gloss black and part J23 gets painted silver. There is a cable linkage that attaches to the peg on J23 and goes back through the cylinders and eventually to the cockpit.
This photo shows the rear of the engine supercharger housing and rear gear case. The little blue/gray cylinder on top of the rear gear case is a control valve to direct oil to the appropriate supercharger clutch. Center circular pad with the slot is for the electrical starter part J15 which gets painted semi-gloss black. The circular pad next to the center one is for what I think is the hydraulic pump it could be something else the P&W book isn’t clear on this. The black part on top of the supercharger housing is the Bendix PT-13 carburetor. This all needs to have detail painting done to it.Another photo of the magneto, distributors and the propeller governor.
Straight on view of the front. You can see the push rod tubes and were I have masked off the little tubes between the cylinders. The cylinders need to be painted steel on the bottom half and silver on the top. I will be adding spark plugs and braided plug wires as soon as they come in the mail.
In in this photo you can see the rear bank of cylinders and on top of each one are the rocker covers they need to be painted matte black. You can see where the intake tubes mount and were the engine mounts to the engine support.

Robert C. Richardson (physics ’58, M.S. ’60) has won the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physics. Richardson, who is Cornell University’s Floyd R. Newman Professor of Physics and director of the Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics, shares the prize with a fellow Cornell professor and a former doctoral student now at Stanford.
The two discovered that a helium isotope, helium 3, can be made into a superfluid–meaning that it can flow without resistance–at about two-thousandths of a degree above absolute zero. Such a discovery is outside the realm of classical physics, which says that movement always causes resistance.
The discovery gives scientists studying the origins of the universe a possible explanation for why stars and galaxies are clumped rather than evenly scattered throughout the universe. The theory is based on the idea that the original material for the universe was a superfluid, and therefore did not encounter friction after the «Big Bang.» It is friction that causes debris from an explosion to scatter in an even pattern.
Richardson has taught at Cornell since 1968. He has served since 1989 on Virginia Tech’s Physics Advisory Committee, a troup that meets occasionally to examine the university’s physics program and to offer advice on its future directions.l Richardson is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Guggenheim Fellow, and a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
Virginia Tech’s sheep center has been named in honor of Jackson Copenhaver (ANSC ’42), a retired professor of animal science whose work helped establish Virginia’s sheep industry as one of the largest and most productive in the eastern United States.
The sheep center currently manages 900 ewes, rams, and lambs. It supports undergraduate and graduate teaching programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, as well as teaching programs for the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Research being conducted there focuses on improving the reproductive performance of sheep.
Michael D’Altrui, who graduated in communication studies in May with a minor in history, and Jennifer E. Hoffman, who earned a B.A. in political science in 1992 with a minor in English, were selected in a national competition for the fellowship that funds up to $24,000 for study toward a master’s degree in history.
D’Altrui, a dean’s list student, plans to teach English in Korea for a year before pursuing graduate studies leading to a teaching career. Hoffman has been pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas while working as a financial-services representative at the Nevada Federal Credit Union.
The James Madison Fellowship funds study toward a master’s degree that includes a concentration of courses on the history and principles of the U.S. Constitution. Dekker has served on the university board since 1989 and has been involved in numerous leadership roles. He is director of the Virginia Tech Foundation, a senior benefactor of the foundation, a member of the Pamplin College of Business Advisory Board, chairman of its development committee, and chairman of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Alumni Association. He received the Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1987.
Dekker spent his career in the textile business with extensive experience in Europe and the United States. Later, he founded Louis Feraud of America to import and distribute the line of upscale women’s apparel on this side of the Atlantic. He retired as vice chairman in 1991.
Dekker’s leadership at Virginia Tech began early. He was class president each of his first three years and was elected president of the corps in 1942. Dekker succeeds Clifton Garvin, the retired chairman of the board of Exxon Corp., as rector. Garvin’s term expired June 30, after eight years on the board. The board also selected James E.
